在过去十年里，环系统仅已知存在于巨行星周围。每个巨行星都拥有其独特且独一无二的环系统和内侧卫星。过去的十年里，发现了来自太阳系外小天体的致密环：Centaur 星体 Chariklo（以及可能的 Chiron），矮行星 Haumea 以及位于太阳系外的矮行星 Quaoar。后者的额外惊喜在于，Quaoar 的环轨道紧随其 Roche 极限之后。本文旨在探讨这些环系统的可能起源与演化。
