HAWC 天文台对伽马射线暴的灵敏度研究

摘要

我们展示了 HAWC(高空水切伦科夫天文台)对伽马射线暴(GRBs)的灵敏度。HAWC 是一个正在墨西哥海拔 4100 米处建造的甚高能伽马射线天文台,它将通过水切伦科夫方法观测大气空气簇射。HAWC 将由 300 个大型水箱组成,每个水箱配备 4 个光电倍增管。HAWC 拥有两套数据采集(DAQ)系统。主 DAQ 系统读出水箱中的符合信号,并重建单个大气簇射的方向和能量。定标器 DAQ 则对探测器中每个光电倍增管(PMT)的击中次数进行计数,并搜索所有 PMT 噪声之上的统计超出。我们表明,HAWC 拥有切实的机会观测到伽马射线暴中至少延伸至 30 GeV 的高能幂律成分,正如 Fermi LAT 所观测到的那样。这两套 DAQ 系统的能量阈值足够低,可以观测到类似于 GRB 090510 和 GRB 090902b 且具有 Fermi LAT 所观测特征的事件。HAWC 将提供关于伽马射线暴高能谱的信息,这反过来有助于理解伽马射线暴喷流中的电子对衰减、河外背景光吸收,以及确定伽马射线暴加速粒子的最高能量。
