大气中大量区域的水汽高度偏干。这对水汽反馈以及诸如暴走式温室效应等一般现象具有重要影响。本章讨论了产生偏干的过程，参考观察、一般流动模式模型以及一系列理想化模型，这些模型产生偏干。虽然本章侧重于地球大气中水汽的偏干，但讨论的过程适用于所有行星大气中可凝物质的通用情况。
