On the connectedness of subcomplexes of a disk complex

Geometric Topology 2014-06-06 v1

Abstract

For a boundary-reducible 33-manifold MM with M\partial M a genus gg surface, we show that if MM admits a genus g+1g+1 Heegaard surface SS, then the disk complex of SS is simply connected. Also we consider the connectedness of the complex of reducing spheres. We investigate the intersection of two reducing spheres for a genus three Heegaard splitting of (torus)×I\mathrm{(torus)} \times I.
