X射线光电子能谱(XPS)是识别元素化学态和电子态的多功能工具。然而,各种初始态和最终态效应使得对 XPS 能谱的解释困难且易出错。金属氧化物表现出多峰 XPS 能谱,当载流子与光电子击后形成的核心空位相互作用时。这些额外峰往往被误认为来自阳离子其他氧化态。通过对部分氧化的 NbOx 薄膜(由分子束沉积制备)的 Nb 3d XPS 能谱进行系统性分析,我们发现靠近费米能级的价带电子对 Nb 氧化物中的卫星峰作出贡献。含 Nb5+(d0)且费米能级附近电子不足或更少的绝缘体 Nb 氧化物没有此类峰;另一方面,含 Nb5+ 的薄膜在足够的表面载流子贡献以形成核心空位-电子耦合时,则会出现卫星峰。
