已耗尽内部和旋转能量的老中子星（ONSs）如果吸积星际介质仍可能发光。ROSAT巡天的分析给出了相当严格的限制，表明关于ONSs可观测性的最乐观预测超出了约~100倍的因素。这里我们探讨两种可能的演化情景来解释ONSs的稀缺。第一种假设ONSs群体并非太快（V<100 km s），且磁场衰变引导演化；第二种假设NSs以高速（V>100 km s）运动并保留其诞生时的磁场。我们发现根据前一种情景，大多数ONSs现在处于螺旋桨阶段；而在后一种情景中，几乎所有ONSs都是沉默的死亡脉冲星。
