星系是从不同视角被观测到的，其观测性质随视角变化。在许多情况下，我们更希望了解星系的内禀性质——即那些不依赖于视角的性质。对于大样本星系，可以通过寻找与星系倾角的相关性，然后应用校正以消除这些依赖性，从而在统计上恢复星系的内禀性质。研究星系的内禀性质可以提供对星系种群的不同印象，并有助于避免将观测性质与不依赖于倾角的量（如晕质量）错误地联系起来。
