此前研究表明,水切伦科夫探测器在探测广延空气簇射(EAS)方面比闪烁计数器具有更高的灵敏度。这在很大程度上是因为它们对 EAS 光子的灵敏度远高于 EAS 电子,而 EAS 光子的数量是 EAS 电子的五倍以上。大面积水切伦科夫探测器可以相对廉价地建造并可靠运行。一个稀疏探测器阵列已被设计出来,利用此类探测器大幅扩展 Milagro 伽马射线天文台收集 EAS 信息的区域。本文将介绍该阵列对 Milagro 探测器性能特征和灵敏度的改进,以及目前安装在 Milagro 探测器附近的原型阵列的初步结果。
