M51 外缘盘中的红外尘埃辐射

我们检查了 M51 仙人掌太空望远镜图像中在 R > R_25 (4.9', 约14 kpc 在 d=9.6 Mpc) 处检测到的微弱红外辐射特征，这些特征与原子氢在外缘盘和潮汹尾巴相关。这些特征的红外颜色与 M51 亮盘中与星际形成星际尘埃相关的颜色一致。然而，假设内外盘之间红外辐射与星际形成星系率关系相同，M51 外缘盘中推断的星际形成效率（以星际形成率与中性气体质量之比表示）比其亮盘低一个数量级。
