HerMES:Herschel-SPIRE对莱曼断裂星系的观测

基于对大天文台起源深度巡天北天区(GOODS-N)的Herschel-SPIRE观测,我们展示了对z~3莱曼断裂星系(LBGs)及其低红移对应体BX/BM星系的亚毫米波(静止系远红外)性质研究的首批结果。我们使用叠加分析来确定远低于当前巡天探测极限的LBGs的性质。尽管LBGs未被单独探测到,但将红外明亮的LBGs(即在Spitzer 24微米处探测到的星系)进行叠加,得到了具有统计显著性的亚毫米波探测,其平均流量<S_{250}>= 5.9+/-1.4 mJy,证实了SPIRE在亚毫米波段探测紫外选取的高红移星系的能力。相比之下,Spitzer 24微米处探测到的BX/BM星系显得更暗,叠加值为<S_{250}> = 2.7 +/-0.8 mJy。通过拟合光谱能量分布(SEDs),我们得出z~3 LBGs和BX/BMs的中位红外光度L_{IR}分别为2.8x10^{12} Lsun和1.5x10^{11} Lsun。我们发现,基于当前测量推导出的LIRL_{IR}估计值与基于z~2 BX/BM星系紫外数据的估计值吻合良好,而z~3红外明亮LBGs的情况则不同,其紫外光度低估了真实的LIRL_{IR}。尽管样本选择效应可能影响该结果,我们认为z~3 LBGs与z~2 BX/BMs之间物理性质(如形态、尘埃分布和恒星形成区范围)的差异也可能发挥了重要作用。
