至少有四个著名的射电基准阵列（VLBI）网络为全球天文学家提供开放式访问。包括欧洲VLBI网络（EVN）、美国VLBA、巴西CMVA以及阿根廷APT/LBA。在本文中，我选择关注这些设施的一个子集，特别是欧洲VLBI网络，无论是独立运行亦或作为包含MERLIN与VLBA的全球VLBI网络的重要组成部分。
