最近的调查发现了数百个局部(z < 0.1)宇宙中低表面亮度星系。表面亮度分布图(即星系空间密度 plotted against中心表面亮度)显示从21.65的亮端截止处到当前观测极限25.0 B mag arcsec^{-2}的平坦分布。由于未看到尺度或质量随中心表面亮度减小而减小的趋势，很可能这些稀疏系统包含宇宙中显著比例的质子质量。本文简要回顾了低表面亮度星系的已知性质，描述了一些关于低表面亮度系统质子质量分数的当前理论及其后果。
