Sloan Digital Sky Survey 发现了一类具有各种极端特性的宽吸收线类星系。许多显示来自 FeII 各异构态的吸收,激发程度各异;几乎完全被 MgII 蓝侧吸收的对象;至少有一个对象显示 FeIII 强于 FeII 的吸收,表明吸收区温度 T>35000 K;还有一个对象甚至似乎出现宽 H-beta 吸收。许多这些极端 BALs 也严重被衰减,不过来自 SDSS 的“正常”BALs(特别是 LoBALs)也显示出内部衰减的证据。
