宇宙射线能谱“踝”处存在混合质量成分的证据

摘要
我们报告了对于超高能宇宙射线,由Pierre Auger Observatory的荧光探测器和地面探测器同时记录的空气簇射中,簇射极大深度与水切伦科夫站信号之间相关性的首次测量。这种相关性测量是混合空气簇射观测站的独特特征,对电磁和缪子成分均敏感。它允许准确确定宇宙射线通量中初级质量的分布范围。到目前为止,对初级质量分布范围的约束一直由系统不确定性主导。目前的相关性测量不受簇射极大深度或水切伦科夫站信号测量中的系统误差影响。该分析依赖于空气簇射的一般特征,因此在强子事件生成器的不确定性方面也具有鲁棒性。在 的“踝”能量范围内观测到的相关性与纯初级宇宙射线成分的预期显著不同。仅由质子和氦组成的轻成分同样与观测不一致。数据可以很好地由包含质量 的原子核的混合成分解释。因此,诸如质子偶极模型等具有几乎纯成分的情景,作为地球超高能宇宙射线通量的唯一解释不被看好。
