Euclid:47 Tuc的对流转变间隙

摘要

我们报告了借助Euclid数据首次探测到球状星团47 Tuc(NGC 104)中的“对流转变间隙”(也称为“M矮星间隙”)。这一特征与晚型矮星物理性质的变化有关,一直难以捉摸,迄今仅有两例探测。利用Euclid提供的大量恒星、高分辨率和测光精度,我们在47 Tuc的主序光度函数中检测到IE22.9I_{\rm E} \approx 22.9处统计显著的尖锐不连续性,我们将其识别为对流转变间隙。我们将47 Tuc中该间隙的观测特性与理论模型进行比较,展示了该间隙如何成为探测球状星团内部化学结构及其多重恒星族的强大诊断工具。继最初在贫金属星团NGC 6397中发现之后,在富金属的47 Tuc中识别出对流间隙表明,这一特征可能比以前认为的更为普遍。这些结果表明,Euclid的变革性影响远不止于宇宙学,其影响遍及天体物理学的多个领域,包括分辨恒星族。
