发现Sculptor矮星系盘状星系的中性氢

中性氢(HI)已被检测到在本地星系群的矮星系盘状星系Sculptor中，采用64米帕克单反射天文台和澳大利亚天文阵列进行映射。检测到的大部分HI位于距离光学中心约15'-20'的两个云状结构中。该气体以与星星相同的系统速度观测，但距离该区域的Magellanic Stream成分至少有125公里/秒远。基于合成观测，对Sculpter星系的HI质量给出下限为3.0×10^4倍托尔森质量，M_HI/L_B≈0.02。即使仅保留10%的气体以中性形式，此量也与来自正常巨星的质量损失相符。
