物质元素的同位素组成(例如 14C/12C, 13C/12C, 2H/1H, 15N/14N 和 18O/16O)是异质的,并受物理、化学和生物机制支配。同位素可用于追踪矿物和有机化合物在生物地球化学转化过程中的命运。过去 20 年来,由于分子水平同位素技术的快速发展,使得测定沉积物、土壤和血液等非常复杂混合物中痕量有机物质的同位素组成成为可能。在简要回顾揭示分子和分子内水平同位素突破的开创性研究之后,本文综述了化合物特异性同位素分析在各个科学领域的精选应用。
