我提议，SN 1998S 早期光谱中看到的宽窄尖顶发射线（全宽至零强度 >20000 km/s），源于密集的周星际气体，而非超新星喷射物。巨大的线宽源于周星际壳层中热电子对窄线辐射的多次散射，其孰素光度约为 1998 年 3 月 6 日的 4。
