摘要
AGB 变星，尤其是大振幅 Mira 型变星，是距离尺度阶梯上的关键一环。在配备自适应光学且针对红外观测进行优化的空间望远镜与极大地面望远镜时代，它们将显得尤为重要。本文回顾了我们目前对这类恒星距离的认识，特别强调了来自 Hipparcos 的改进，以及近期在本星系群星系方面的工作。除了为星系外距离提供必要的校准外，Gaia 还可能对目前知之甚少的质量损失过程本身提供前所未有的深刻见解。
