Arecibo氢条带调查（Arecibo HI Strip Survey）的结果——这是一项对外星系的无偏氢（HI）调查——结合光学和21cm后续观测数据，确定了当前时代下氢质量函数及其宇宙质量密度。两者都与之前基于光学选取星系所计算的估计值相符。这种一致性是由于，尽管星系的光学中心面积亮度分布为平坦，但我们未能发现中心面积亮度小于24 B-mag/arcsec²的星系群体，尽管这些星系并不存在观测选择性偏好。
