萨德伯里中微子观测台用低本底$^3$He 正比计数器阵列

摘要

为了在萨德伯里中微子观测台(SNO)中对太阳中微子的总活性通量进行独特测量,构建了一个中性流探测器(NCDs)阵列。SNO 实验第三阶段的数据采集于 2004 年 11 月至 2006 年 11 月之间,即在添加 NCD 阵列以提高 SNO 探测器的中性流灵敏度之后。该阵列由 36 串填充了3^3He 和 CF4_4混合气体的正比计数器组成,能够探测重水(D2_2O)中中微子 - 氘核中性流反应释放的中子;另有 4 串填充了4^4He 和 CF4_4混合气体,用于本底测量。正比计数器直径为 5 cm。部署的阵列总长度为 398 m。SNO NCD 阵列是迄今为止生产的放射性本底最低的大型正比计数器阵列。本文描述了 NCD 阵列的设计、建造、部署和特性表征,讨论了电子学和数据采集系统,并分析了事件信号特征与本底。
