已知本地与低红移(<)星系广泛遵循双峰分布:具有相对稳定恒星形成率的主动恒星形成星系,与被动系统。这两类天体由处于相对缓慢过渡中的星系相连。相比之下,理论预言在宇宙早期与低质量系统中恒星形成是随机的:这些星系在星暴事件与恒星形成受抑阶段之间快速转换,甚至可能引发暂时性宁静——即所谓迷你猝灭事件。然而,恒星形成暴发的观测约束极为缺乏。因此直接观测原初宇宙中的迷你猝灭星系对约束星系形成与转化模型至关重要。早期猝灭星系已被证认至红移 ,且均被发现为高质量()且相对年老。本文报道一个在 z7.3 处的(迷你)猝灭星系,彼时宇宙仅 700~Myr 老。JWST/NIRSpec 光谱非常蓝(-0.16~mag),但呈现巴耳末断裂且无星云发射线。该星系经历了短促星暴后迅速猝灭;其恒星质量(4-6)落于对多种反馈机制敏感的范围,这可能仅导致暂时性猝灭。
