在本研究中，我们报道了一枚铅币的成分、微观结构和晶体学性质，该硬币多年来一直被认为是公元前4世纪于意大利南部铸造的真品银币。对该物体的材料表征使我们发现了一种此前未曾报道过的古代锻造技术，该技术旨在对铅基底进行镀银。收集到的数据揭示了一种基于在Pb基底上进行金属镀层工艺的当代造假程序。该镀层被鉴定为双层结构，最内层为Cu，最外可见层为Ag。就镀层施加技术而言，所收集的证据清楚地表明，这件文物的原始外观无法用古典时期任何已确立的人工镀银层生长方法来解释。现在正借助现代、完全无损的科学方法对这一技术进行解释。
