SDSS调试期间获取的早期数据导致发现了一颗极冷白矮星。它似乎比任何其他已知白矮星具有更强的来自氢分子的碰撞诱导吸收,表明其温度比任何其他白矮星都低。虽然其距离目前未知,但它具有出奇小的自行,因此不太可能是晕星。对白矮星冷却时间的分析表明,该天体可能是一颗具有氦核的低质量恒星。SDSS成像和光谱还恢复了先前已知最冷的白矮星LHS 3250,表明SDSS将成为识别这些极端天体的有效工具。
