低金属丰度下高质量密近双星的高比例

摘要
在高金属丰度下,大多数大质量恒星至少拥有一个近距恒星伴星。此类双星的演化受强相互作用过程支配,严重影响其终结生命的超新星及致密残余物的性质。对于高红移星系的低金属丰度环境,在导致双星相互作用的分离范围内,对大质量恒星多重性性质的约束极度缺失。在此我们表明,即使低金属丰度下,大质量恒星存在于密近双星中也是普遍现象。利用甚大望远镜,我们对小麦哲伦云中具有代表性的139颗大质量O型星样本进行了多历元视向速度测量,该星系的金属含量约为太阳值的五分之一。我们发现其中45%显示出视向速度变化,表明它们是密近双星系统的成员,且轨道周期主要短于一年。对观测偏差的修正表明,我们样本中至少70[+11:-6]%的O型星处于密近双星中,且所有O型星中至少68[+7:-8]%在其一生中与伴星发生相互作用。我们未发现支持多重性性质随金属丰度存在统计学显著趋势的证据。我们的结果表明,多重性和双星相互作用主导了大质量恒星的演化,并决定了其宇宙反馈及爆炸命运。
