Totaro's Question for Tori of Low Rank

Algebraic Geometry 2016-04-13 v3

Abstract

Let GG be a smooth connected linear algebraic group and XX be a GG-torsor. Totaro asked: if XX admits a zero-cycle of degree d1d \geq 1, then does XX have a closed \'etale point of degree dividing dd? This question is entirely unexplored in the literature for algebraic tori. We settle Totaro's question affirmatively for algebraic tori of rank 2\leq 2.
