Short intervals containing a prescribed number of primes

Abstract

We prove that for every nonnegative integer mm there exists an ε>0\varepsilon>0 such that if λ(0,ε]\lambda\in (0,\varepsilon] and xx is sufficiently large in terms of mm, then the number of positive integers nxn\leq x for which the interval [n,n+λlogn][n,n+\lambda\log n] contains exactly mm primes is at least a constant times x/logx.x/\log x. This improves a result of T. Freiberg, when λ\lambda is small.
