Abstract

The fundamental unit of Z[N]\Z[\sqrt{N}] for square-free N=5mod8N=5 mod 8 is either ϵ\epsilon or ϵ3\epsilon^3 where ϵ\epsilon denotes the fundamental unit of the maximal order of \Q(N)\Q(\sqrt{N}). We give infinitely many examples for each case.
