Finding integral diagonal pairs in a two dimensional $\mathcal{N}$--set

Number Theory 2010-07-09 v1

Abstract

According to [1] an nn-dimensional N\mathcal{N}--set is a compact subset AA of Rn\mathbb{R}^n such that for every xx in Rn\mathbb{R}^n there is yy in AA with yxy-x in Zn\mathbb{Z}^n. We prove that every two dimensional N\mathcal{N}--set AA must contain distinct points x,yx,y such that xyx-y is in Z2\mathbb{Z}^2 and xyx-y is neither horizontal nor vertical. This answers a question of P. Hegarty and M. Nathanson.
