Extremely closed subgroups and a variant on Glauberman's $Z^*$-theorem

Abstract

Let GG be a finite group and let HH be a subgroup of GG. We say that HH is extremely closed in GG if H,HgNG(H)=H\langle H,H^g\rangle\cap N_G(H)=H for all gG.g\in G. In this paper, we determine the structure of finite groups with an extremely closed abelian pp-subgroup for some prime pp. In particular, we show that if GG contains such a subgroup HH, then G=NG(H)Op(G).G=N_G(H)O_{p'}(G). This is a variant on the celebrated Glauberman's ZZ^*-Theorem.
