Zero-sum constants related to the Jacobi symbol

Abstract

For AZnA\subseteq\mathbb Z_n, the AA-weighted Gao constant EA(n)E_A(n) is defined to be the smallest natural number kk such that any sequence of kk elements in Zn\mathbb Z_n has a subsequence of length nn whose AA-weighted sum is zero. When AA is the set of all units in Zn\mathbb Z_n, we determine the value of EA(n)E_A(n) and values of two related constants CA(n)C_A(n) and DA(n)D_A(n). We also characterize all sequences of length EA(n)1E_A(n)-1 in Zn\mathbb Z_n which do not have any AA-weighted zero-sum subsequence of length nn when nn is a power of 2.
