Abstract

We prove that if A,BA,B are compact subsets of R\mathbb{R} such that the upper density of BB is positive at every point of BB, then there is a closed null set NAN\subset A such that N+B=A+BN+B=A+B. As a corollary we find that if A,BRA,B\subset \mathbb{R} are measurable, and every null subset NN of AA can be translated into BB (that is, if BB contains a suitable translate of NN), then there is a null set N0N_0 such that AN0A\setminus N_0 can be translated into BB. The topic is related to some consistency results of the theory of additive properties of the reals.
