The minus order for idempotents

Abstract

Let PP and QQ be idempotents on a Hilbert space H.\mathcal{H}. The minus order PQP\preceq Q is defined by the equation PQ=QP=P.PQ=QP=P. In this note, we first present some necessary and sufficient conditions for which the supremum and infimum of idempotents PP and QQ exist with respect to the minus order. Also, some properties of the minimum QorQ^{or} are characterized, where QorQ^{or}=min {P:P\{P^{'}: P^{'} is an orthogonal projection on H\mathcal{H} with QP}.Q \preceq P^{'} \}.
