The conjugacy class number k(G) - a different perspective

Abstract

Let GG be a finite group. Let k(G)k(G) denote the number of conjugacy classes of GG and let m(G)m(G) denote the least positive integer nn such that the union of any nn distinct non-trivial conjugacy classes of GG together with the identity of GG is a subgroup of GG. We prove that m(G)=k(G)1m(G)=k(G)-1 for all m(G)2m(G)\ge 2.
