Sparse vertex cutsets and the maximum degree

Abstract

We show that every graph GG of maximum degree Δ\Delta and sufficiently large order has a vertex cutset SS of order at most Δ\Delta that induces a subgraph G[S]G[S] of maximum degree at most Δ3\Delta-3. For Δ{4,5}\Delta\in \{ 4,5\}, we refine this result by considering also the average degree of G[S]G[S]. If GG has no Kr,rK_{r,r} subgraph, then we show the existence of a vertex cutset that induces a subgraph of maximum degree at most (11(r2))Δ+O(1)\left(1-\frac{1}{{r\choose 2}}\right)\Delta+O(1).
