Character Estimates of Adjoint Simple Lie Groups

Abstract

Call a compact, connected, simple Lie group GG {\emph{adjoint simple}} if it has trivial center. Let CGC\subset G be a nontrivial conjugacy class, eGe\in G the identity element of GG. We prove the existence of an NNN\in\mathbb{N}, depending on GG but not CC, such that ee lies in the interior of CnC^n for all nNn\geq N. We then prove that a disk DCD\subset\mathbb{C} of radius less than 1, contained in the unit disk D1D_1 and tangent to D1D_1 at z=1z=1, contains the image of every normalized character χ(e)1χ\chi(e)^{-1}\chi of GG.
