Let $N_g$ be a closed, connected, nonorientable surface of genus $g$. We prove that for $g \ge 13$, the mapping class group $\text{Mod}(N_g)$ can be generated by exactly two elements. This improves the previously known bound of $g \ge 19$.

In this paper, we give polynomial-time algorithms that can take a graph G with a given combinatorial embedding on an orientable surface S of genus g and produce a planar drawing of G in R^2, with a bounding face defined by a polygonal…

We address the question of when a covering of the boundary of a surface can be extended to a covering of the surface (equivalently: when is there a branched cover with a prescribed monodromy). If such an extension is possible, when can the…

An automorphism $f$ of a closed orientable surface $\Sigma$ is said to be extendable over the 3-sphere $S^3$ if $f$ extends to an automorphism of the pair $(S^3, \Sigma)$ with respect to some embedding $\Sigma \hookrightarrow S^3$. We prove…

In this work we study homeomorphisms of closed orientable surfaces homotopic to the identity, focusing on the existence of non-contractible periodic orbits. We show that, if $g$ is such a homeomorphism, and if $\hat g$ is its lift to the…

We study maximal families W of the Hilbert scheme, H(d,g)_{sc}, of smooth connected space curves whose general curve C lies on a smooth surface S of degree s. We give conditions on C under which W is a generically smooth component of…

Let Mod_{g,b} denote the mapping class group of a surface of genus g with b punctures. Feng Luo asked in a recent preprint if there is a universal upper bound, independent of genus, for the number of torsion elements needed to generate…

We show that central extensions of the mapping class group $M_g$ of the closed orientable surface of genus $g$ by $\Z$ are residually finite. Further we give rough estimates of the largest $N=N_g$ such that homomorphisms from $M_g$ to SU(N)…

We consider orientation-preserving actions of finite groups $G$ on pairs $(S^3, \Sigma)$, where $\Sigma$ denotes a compact connected surface embedded in $S^3$. In a previous paper, we considered the case of closed, necessarily orientable…

Finite presentations for the mapping class group M(F) are known for arbitrary orientable compact surface F. If F is non-orientable, then such presentations are known only when F has genus at most 3 and few boundary components. In this paper…
