We compute the fundamental group of a toroidal compactification of a Hermitian locally symmetric space $D/\Gamma$, without assuming either that $\Gamma$is neat or that it is arithmetic. We also give bounds for the first Betti number.

The present work obtains the fundamental group of a toroidal compactification X' of a non-compact quotient X of a Hermitian symmetric space D of non-compact type by a lattice L in the isometry group G of D. As a consequence it derives the…

We show that if a flat group scheme acts properly, with finite stabilizers, on an algebraic space, then a quotient exists as a separated algebraic space. More generally we show any flat groupid for which the family of stabilizers is finite…

In this paper we prove that if $R$ is a proper alternative ring whose additive group has no $3$-torsion and whose non-zero commutators are not zero-divisors, then $R$ has no zero-divisors. It follows from a theorem of Bruck and Kleinfeld…

In this paper, we show that the canonical divisor of a smooth toroidal compactification of a complex hyperbolic manifold must be nef if the dimension is greater or equal to three. Moreover, if $n\geq 3$ we show that the numerical dimension…

We study the hyperbolicity of compactifications of quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups. We prove that, up to an \'etale cover, they are Kobayashi hyperbolic modulo the boundary. Applying our techniques to Siegel…
