In this note we show that if $p$ is an odd prime and $G$ is a powerful $p$-group with $N\leq G^{p}$ and $N$ normal in $G$, then $N$ is powerfully nilpotent. An analogous result is proved for $p=2$ when $N\leq G^{4}$.

Let $H$ be a finite quasisimple classical group, i.e. $H$ is perfect and $S:=H/Z(H)$ is a finite simple classical group. We prove in this paper that, excluding the cases when the simple group $S$ has a very exceptional Schur multiplier such…

Let $X$ be a Riemann surface, and let $f:X\to\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{C}$ be an indecomposable (branched) covering of genus $g$ and degree $n$ whose monodromy group has more than one minimal normal subgroup. Closing a gap in the literature, we…

We give a short proof of a strong form of Weyl's law for $\text{SO}(N)$ using well known facts of the theory of modular forms. The exponent of the error term is sharp when the rank is at least~$4$. We also discuss the cases with smaller…

A proper subgroup $H$ in a finite group $G$ is said to be large if $|H|^3\geq |G|$. In this paper, we determined all large maximal subgroups of almost simple classical groups. Combined with the work of Alavi and Burness (J. Algebra 421…

If the group of a 2-knot group $K$ has an abelian normal subgroup of rank $\geq1$ which is not finitely generated then either $K$ has no minimal Seifert hypersurface or $K$ is topologically equivalent to Example 10 of Ralph Fox's``{\it A…

We classify group gradings on the simple Lie algebra $L$ of type $D_4$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from 2: fine gradings up to equivalence and $G$-gradings, with a fixed group $G$, up to isomorphism. For…
