Inspired by previous work of Shoup, Lenstra-De Smit and Couveignes-Lercier, we give fast algorithms to compute in (the first levels of) the ell-adic closure of a finite field. In many cases, our algorithms have quasi-linear complexity.

Given a prime number $p$, we consider the tower of finite fields $F_p=L_{-1}\subset L_0\subset L_1\subset\cdots$, where each step corresponds to an Artin-Schreier extension of degree $p$, so that for $i\geq 0$, $L_{i}=L_{i-1}[c_{i}]$, where…

This paper concerns towers of curves over a finite field with many rational points, following Garcia--Stichtenoth and Elkies. We present a new method to produce such towers. A key ingredient is the study of algebraic solutions to Fuchsian…

In this article we study the behavior of Newton polygons along $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers of curves. Fix an ordinary curve $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$. By a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower $X_\infty/X$ we mean a tower of…

The p-class tower $F_p^\infty(k)$ of a number field k is its maximal unramified pro-p extension. It is considered to be known when the p-tower group, that is the Galois group $G:=Gal(F_p^\infty(k)/k)$, can be identified by an explicit…

For a fixed prime p, the p-class tower F(p,infinity,K) of a number field K is considered to be known if a pro-p presentation of the Galois group H = Gal( F(p,infinity,K)/K ) is given. In the last few years, it turned out that the Artin…
