The quadratic sum problem for symplectic pairs

Rings and Algebras 2023-06-01 v1

Abstract

Let (b,u)(b,u) be a pair consisting of a symplectic form bb on a finite-dimensional vector space VV over a field F\mathbb{F}, and of a bb-alternating endomorphism uu of VV (i.e. b(x,u(x))=0b(x,u(x))=0 for all xx in VV). Let pp and qq be arbitrary polynomials of degree 22 with coefficients in F\mathbb{F}. We characterize, in terms of the invariant factors of uu, the condition that uu splits into u1+u2u_1+u_2 for some pair (u1,u2)(u_1,u_2) of bb-alternating endomorphisms such that p(u1)=q(u2)=0p(u_1)=q(u_2)=0.
