The $\pi^+$--emission puzzle in $^4_\Lambda$He decay

Abstract

We re-examine the puzzling π+\pi^+ emission from the weak decay of Λ4^4_\LambdaHe and propose an explanation in terms of a three-body decay of the virtual Σ+\Sigma^+. Such a resolution of the π+\pi^+ decay puzzle is consistent with the calculated Σ+\Sigma^+ probability in light Λ\Lambda hypernuclei as well as the experimentally observed π+\pi^+ energy spectrum and ss--wave angular distribution.
