The fundamental groupoid as a terminal costack

Algebraic Topology 2014-06-18 v1

Abstract

Let XX be a topological space. We denote by π0(X)\pi_0(X) the set of connected components of XX and by Π1(U)\Pi_1(U) the fundamental groupoid. In this paper we prove that for good topological spaces the assignments Uπ0(U)U\mapsto\pi_0(U) and UΠ1(U)U\mapsto\Pi_1(U) are the terminal cosheaf and costack respectively.
