The Extrinsic Primitive Torsion Problem

Group Theory 2021-01-06 v3 Representation Theory

Abstract

Let PkP_k be the subgroup generated by kkth powers of primitive elements in FrF_r, the free group of rank rr. We show that F2/PkF_2/P_k is finite if and only if kk is 11, 22, or 33. We also fully characterize F2/PkF_2/P_k for k=2,3,4k = 2,3,4. In particular, we give a faithful nine dimensional representation of F2/P4F_2/P_4 with infinite image.
