The Chevalley-Bass Theorem

Number Theory 2023-08-09 v3

Abstract

This is an exposition of a theorem due to Chevalley (1951) and Bass (1965). Let KK be a finitely generated field. Then there exists a positive integer Λ\Lambda, depending only on KK, such that for every positive integer nn the following holds: if αK\alpha\in K is a Λn\Lambda nth power in the cyclotomic extension K(ζΛn)K(\zeta_{\Lambda n}), then α\alpha is an nnth power in KK. We also give explicit expressions for a suitable Λ\Lambda of two kinds: one in terms of the degree of the maximal abelian subfield of KK, the other in terms of the discriminant of this subfield.
