Splitting the center of a Sylow subgroup

Abstract

Suppose pp is a prime and SS is a Sylow pp-subgroup of a finite group GG. If SS is normal in GG, then Z(S)Z(S) is the direct product of SZ(G)S \cap Z(G) with [Z(S),G][Z(S), G]. We prove an analogous result for all groups except in some cases where p=2p=2 and GG is not solvable, where we have counterexamples. We also extend this result to fusion systems.
