Right-angled Artin groups and finite subgraphs of curve graphs

Geometric Topology 2014-05-26 v2 Group Theory

Abstract

We show that for a sufficiently simple surface SS, a right-angled Artin group A(Γ)A(\Gamma) embeds into \Mod(S)\Mod(S) if and only if Γ\Gamma embeds into the curve graph \mC(S)\mC(S) as an induced subgraph. When SS is sufficiently complicated, there exists an embedding A(Γ)\Mod(S)A(\Gamma)\to\Mod(S) for some Γ\Gamma not contained in \mC(S)\mC(S).
