Pattern avoidance in compositions and powers of permutations

Abstract

A permutation π\pi is said to avoid a chain (σ:τ)(\sigma:\tau) of patterns if π\pi avoids σ\sigma and π2\pi^2 avoids τ.\tau. In this paper, we define a notion of pattern avoidance for compositions of positive integers and use that idea to enumerate permutations of length nn that avoid the chain (312,321:σ)(312,321:\sigma) for any pattern σm1Sm\sigma\in \bigcup_{m\geq 1} S_m. We also enumerate those permutations that avoid the chain (312,4321:σ)(312,4321:\sigma) for any σS3.\sigma\in S_3.
