On Primitive Words I: A New Algorithm

Group Theory 2011-09-12 v2 Combinatorics

Abstract

Let FkF_k be the free group on kk generators, and let HJ\FkH\le J\le \F_k be subgroups of finite rank. We present a new elementary algorithm to determine whether HH is a free factor of JJ. In particular, this algorithm can determine whether a given element wFkw\in F_k is primitive, i.e. whether it belongs to some basis of FkF_k.
