Normalizer of Twisted Chevalley Groups over Commutative Rings

Abstract

Let RR be a commutative ring with unity. Consider the twisted Chevalley group Gπ,σ(Φ,R)G_{\pi, \sigma} (\Phi, R) of type ϕ\phi over RR and its elementary subgroup Eπ,σ(Φ,R)E'_{\pi, \sigma} (\Phi, R). This paper investigates the normalizers of Eπ,σ(Φ,R)E'_{\pi, \sigma}(\Phi, R) and Gπ,σ(Φ,R)G_{\pi, \sigma}(\Phi, R) in the larger group Gπ,σ(Φ,S)G_{\pi, \sigma}(\Phi, S), where SS is an extension ring of RR. We establish that under certain conditions on RR these normalizers coincide. Moreover, in the case of adjoint type groups, we show that they are precisely equal to Gπ,σ(Φ,R)G_{\pi, \sigma}(\Phi, R).
